On 22 February 2019, the Tana Forum Secretariat organized an experts workshop to review the publications that set the stage for discussions at the Forum each year. This year’s Tana Forum will take place from 4-5 May in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia under the theme “Political Dynamics in the Horn of Africa: Nurturing the Emerging Peace Trends”.
The workshop convened seven experts: Prof. Emeritus Mohamed Salih, Prof. Charles Ukeje, Dr. Rhuks Ako, Dr. Dawit Toga, Mr. Habtamu Legesse, Ms. Sadia Behir, and Dr. Mesfin Gebremichael. Michelle Ndiaye, the Head of Tana Forum Secretariat and Director of the Africa Peace and Security Programme at IPSS, welcomed the participants and expressed the Institute’s gratitude for their contributions to the forthcoming publications, these include the State of Peace and Security in Africa (SPSA) report and the Tana Policy Papers. She also mentioned that the workshop was an opportunity to provide input to the Forum’s draft agenda.
The experts reviewed the draft SPSA report outline and highlighted the salient issues that should be covered in the report, including trends, challenges and opportunities. Mr. Legesse and Ms. Behir, contributors to the Tana Policy Papers, presented the outlines of their policy briefs and received input on what can be improved to best capture the theme. The Forum’s agenda was also reviewed and several ideas were proposed to refine the agenda and shape the discussion of the sub-themes.
The SPSA report and the Tana Policy Papers will be published ahead of the Forum in both English and French.
